Nourishing our body is primary- it is what carries the rest of our energy around from place to place. And whether it is doing some stretches before bed, running a 5K, or just walking your dog- move your body. Feed your body, preferably food that you can identify the ingredients, and drink water. Pick one small thing to start doing for your body…
Creative energy and care isn’t about being able to draw, or to paint- its about letting your brain play for a bit. It can be as simple as reading something that makes you wonder, or mapping out a new idea for renovating your kitchen, or planning the ideal date night. Taking time to let your brain wander and build new pathways is imperative to your health.
Social interaction is different than it was 5 years ago…we are less likely to shop at the mall, or sometimes even meet with a friend. The ‘working from home’ trend has further isolated us, and we are more comfortable with texting as a replacement for visiting with a friend face to face. Make time to visit with one person voice to voice this week.
When we are physically tired, we need to rest. Our brain can get ‘tired’ and need a break too. If you are into meditation, this is a great tool. However, for those who aren’t- there are other options. Try coloring with crayons or markers. Or a crossword puzzle, or a sudoku, or a game of Scrabble. Brains need mental exercises, doing different things.
Work life balance …are you working from home & find that there is no ‘line’ between work time and home time—going back to work after the kids are in bed, because you took a break to do some laundry this afternoon? Things like this mean you can feel like you are working 24/7. Taking time to make a list for tomorrow, or shutting off your phone after supper can help.
Feel your feelings. I say this to my clients all the time. The best way to take care of yourself emotionally is to let yourself feel a range of emotions. Rather than stuffing them, or numbing them…make a place for them. Try to understand where they come from and realize that all emotions are signals.
