what is the difference between a therapist and a counselor??

believe it or not, there is one!

Therapist

  • Must be licensed. Requires at least a Masters Degree and 300+ hours of supervision

  • Trained in various types of therapy

  • Can address complex mental health issues.

  • Addresses diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions and issues.

let’s sort this out once and for all.

Some people ask me- “are you a counselor or a therapist?”

I am a therapist, who is also a counselor. How is that for confusing?!

Counselor

  • Requires no license, nor degree to operate. Many are called counselors- camp counselors, loan counselors, diet counselors.

  • Tend to be more of a sounding board for situational issues.

  • May focus in on one issue like stress or addiction or grief.

So all mental health therapists can be a counselor, but not all counselors can be a mental health therapist.
